Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Description

Liquorice is a flowering plant and one of the most widely used medicinal herbs from the Fabaceae family. The root extract, derived from Glycyrrhiza glabra, has been valued for thousands of years, with its use traced back to around 2300 BC. Known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, liquorice has long been used as a key ingredient in cough syrups and traditional remedies. Its natural sweetness comes from glycyrrhizin, a compound found in the root, which is 30–50 times sweeter than sugar.
